Improving the outcomes for women

Outcomes for women in custody are poor with rates of self-harm incidents at five times higher than in the male prison estate “In 2017 the rate was 2093 self-harm incidents per 1000 prisoners”. The reoffending rates for women are higher than those for men, particularly following short prison sentences of less than a year (April to June 2016, 70.7% reoffending rate)

Almost 60% of female offenders have experienced domestic violence and almost half (48%) of female prisoners said they committed their crime due to coercion.

Through a service level agreement, we engage with trusted partners who support us with  providing holistic interventions to women in the Southwest who come into contact with the criminal justice system.  Our programme aims to strengthen the support available to Women, this includes ensuring relevant and sustainable community support is available for women who are leaving HMP Eastwood Park.
